Whiritoa and Surrounding Areas
Whiritoa
The hidden gem of Whiritoa Beach is one that must be experienced by both New Zealanders and visitors. Away from the hustle and bustle of more popular neighbouring beach towns, Whiritoa has simplicity on it's side.
At the South end of the beach (near our accommodation), there is the popular 'blowhole'. The blowhole is an awesome spot to visit - on calm days and low tide, you may be able to walk inside, and on rough days at high tide, it can put on a show like no other.

The South end also features 'The Gap' which can be a swimhole, and is a lot of fun for both the old and the young when waves come crashing through the gap.

The North end of the beach is home to the calm lagoon - perfect for little kids and adults alike, especially when the sea is rough.
There is also a short bush walk across to Waimama Bay - perfect for a change of scene and a little adventure - pack a picnic and make it a day!
Whangamata
~15 minute drive
Whangamata is only a short drive away.
Whangamata is considered to be a summer hotspot. You can head across to check out the beach, grab a drink from a bar, or test out a restaurant. You can also stock up at the local New World on any necessities you may need, or treat yourself to a new outfit from one of the many surf shops.
Waihi
~20 minute drive
Waihi is a short drive in the opposite direction to Whangamata. Waihi is known for it being an old gold mining town. Even today, you can walk around the rim of the mine, or organise a van tour inside. Waihi town also boasts a few cafe's, New World and Bunnings along with a few other shops along its main street.
Additionally, Waihi beach is a further 15 minutes drive, and another great bustling holiday spot.
